Bioprocess : Biomolecules, Bioraffinery and Biosourced Materials (4BIO)
Presentation
This theme focuses on the production, extraction, purification and characterization of biomolecules such as proteins and polysaccharides from plant and microbial biomasses.
Their implementation as biological, techno-functional agents and materials is handled to better comprehend structures/functions relations.
In a multi-scale approach, the work undertaken:
- involves the development of process diagrams for the selective and fractional extraction of the different classes of biomolecules,
- requires the implementation of complex analytical tools for the structural characterization of biomolecules,
- is based on engineering sciences (chemical engineering, rheology, industrial microbiology ...) and life sciences (structural biochemistry, enzyme engineering, microbiology).
There are multiple applications of this work and they cover various domains:
- plant or microbial biomass fractionation processes according to a biorefinery strategy
- processes for the fine purification of biomolecules by filtration and chromatography techniques
- the use of biomolecules in several fields of application (biological assets, hydrocolloids, biosourced materials).
