Presentation

The team "Chemical Engineering, Applied Thermodynamics and Biosystems" (GePEB), whose results prior to 2011 are under the Chemical and Biochemical Engineering laboratory label (LGCB), now comprises 25 permanent researchers, 20 to 30 doctoral students, Postdoc, contractual researchers and master students. The GePEB team addresses areas of application such as the production of energy vectors, biomaterials, environmental engineering, food processes engineering, artificial closed ecosystems, etc. GePEB team is structured around three main research themes and with a fourth transverse theme of applications:

  1. Bioreactors and Photo-reactive Systems (BioSPhoR)
  2. Bioprocesses: Biomolecules, Biorefining, Biosourced Materials (4 Bio)
  3. Bioprocessing: Properties, Interfaces, Flow Phenomena (BPIE)
  4. Integrated System Analysis and Industrial Ecology (IE)

Since its creation, GEPEB team has been developing an integrated chemical engineering approach for biological, chemical and physical phenomena involved in transformation and biotransformation processes. These research works share a common methodology, based on the application of mass, energy, entropy and momentum balances; they relate to the modelling of the coupling between various phenomena by developing systemic studies. This requires a thorough understanding of the mechanisms and a detailed knowledge of the biological, physical and thermochemical properties of the media and materials considered. The synthesis and interweaving of these studies are carried out during the simulation and modelling steps, systematically applied at all scales. This ability to integrate disciplines around a unique core of modelling is the source of all GePEB activities. This gives these researches all their applicative and innovative power for a wide variety of processes and bioprocesses.
